I stumbled on a cool blog last night that’s mainly geared toward old swing style.
There’s a ton of good info there if ya haven’t seen it yet.

Johnathan is a great player. When I had the Western Swing band I would have him sub for me. He’s definitely an authority on the style.

Dan Hipped me to this guy during our lesson last week. I love it.

Speaking of Charlie Christian, there are some good tabs and analysis of his solos at http://home.roadrunner.com/~valdes/

Absolutely! that website is a wealth of information. Some of the fingering is a little wierd for me but, great detail!

I agree the fingering is odd and not very logical in my opinion. Solid info though, there used to be another c.c site that ended up going down but they got it back up which all the info on it as an e book so you could download it and keep it but it seems to have gone now also.

Thought I would post this up I thought it was a great watch. It’s about how Django survived through ww2 wile germany occupied France.

Thanks for posting that Dan. I’d probably never run into that film otherwise. There’s quite a lot of myth surrounding his survival but I think it was just raw talent, being in the right places at the right time, and that one detail that he happened to live in a real house rather than a Gypsy camp when they were looking for Belgium born Gypsies. The fact that the Nazis were exploiting everything Paris probably helped. Quite a story.

I’ve never seen this film. I thought it was well done. I often wondered how he survived. I have some recordings of the propoganda band Charlie and his orchestra. great playing their seems as I recall a couple electric guitar solos that were pretty hip. One guy I really enjoy listening to Is Marcel Bianchi. I’m also a huge fan of Oscar Aleman. I heard he was hired to play if Django didn’t show up. I’d like to know about his story.

Oscar Aleman was a bad ass. Could play anything. You have to give props to Django for who he was and what he did, but I always enjoyed Oscar and Marcel more. The biographies of Django and Stephane Grappelli are very interesting to read and get the stories of Django. A lot of them are pretty funny with some of the quirks he had of the Gypsy ways, or how he would just disappear on a gig and no one would ever know where he was for months, then all of a sudden he would just pop up at a gig that had been booked to play. Then you would end up with some killer cat replacement for Django, like Oscar, playing the bill together. Stephane’s B-day gig CD “85 and Still Swingin’: Live at Carnegie Hall” has some very cool Gypsy stuff at the end with Bucky Pizzarelli tearing it up. It is a good CD.

I’ll have to check that CD out. I have a gair bit of Oscar Aleman stuff. To me just felt a little more greasy. The poswar Django stuff on electric is pretty cool. I can hear how the times were changing and how Django aproached it. I’m with you though I love the way Marcel plays.

Does anyone know how to access the Solo Flight Charlie Christian transcription site? Is it still out there somewhere? I just get the link below when trying my old bookmark for it.
