ParticipantThere are comments below the Youtube video saying George Barnes is the lead guitar on this one. Just wondering if this is on a record or cd somewhere. In any case, great licks and I like the song.

ParticipantIt is true. When he moved to Chicago he hooked up with Big Bill Broonzy and I believe there may be some recordings of that. They at least played together. And some of Barnes’ first recordings were with Big Bill, and I believe Barnes is credited on some of these Gillum recordings.
Check out Jazz Gillum Complete recorded works Vol. 1 (1936-38) put out by Document.

KeymasterThere are a couple podcasts that highlighted George’s early career. I will dig them up and try to get them to any of oyu that are interested. EL Toro Records put out a Barnes album that is pretty comprehensive. It’s available at blue beat records. Lots of great country blues stuff. To think he was only 17 or so. Truly impressive.

ParticipantThanks Craner. That’s a must have for me so I just ordered the cd used from Barnes and Noble for about 16 bucks shipped. There’s a good podcast with Barnes’s Broonzy stuff on there. Pretty sure it’s posted here on this forum somewhere. He had a way of phrasing that’s recognizable as his playing. Thanks again.
